Helena Bottmiller does not think it is very safe. She quotes from a study by the CDC which claims that 48,000,000 Americans are poisoned by food each years; of these, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die. There are many aspects to the problem.
We have fewer city and county health officials due to budget cutting; we've lost 50,000 since 2008. Regulation is fragmented. There are more than a dozen federal
agencies involved in food safety, including USDA, FDA, CDC and EPA.
Congress did pass the
Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) in December 2010. However, nothing has happened as the OMB us still trying to formulate the rules.
