Pesticides and bees
This century has seen major declines in the bee population. Last year may have been the worst, as 40-50% of the bee hives in this country were wiped out. That means fewer fruits and vegetables and higher prices for those that make it to market.
Some think the reason for the decimation is a new class of pesticides known as neonicotinoids, which are incorporated
into the plants themselves. Others blame
pesticides, fungicides and herbicides in general. Some say this year was so bad because of the drought.
