Since the late 1990s the population of monarch butterflies has fallen 90%. In the last century the population peaked at
roughly 1 billion. Now the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Wildlife Federation and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation will be spending $3.2 million to save the habitat of the butterfly. The monarch is a traveling butterfly; it has migrated thousands of miles over many generations from Mexico, across the United States to Canada, and then back again. But their habitat has gotten smaller because of farming and urban sprawl. The organizations will attempt to restore the habitat by planting native milkweed and nectar plants, which the butterfly depends on for food and breeding.
