Look at this chart from the Labor Department. It plots private sector jobs from January 1998 to January 2009. It is not as clear as I'd like, but, if you look closely, you'll see that the number is about the same in 2009 as it was in 1999.
The accompanying text looks at October 1999 and 2009. In 1999 there were 109,000,000 private sector jobs, in 2009 there were 108,000,000.
Isn't this a more severe problem than sending troops to Afghanistan?
