Last month I wrote about Finnish schools. Earlier this month Pasi Sahlberg, a major force in Finnish education, visited New York City. Anu Partanen reported on his visit and concluded that the fundamental difference between our educational system and that of Finland is the emphasis on equality.
The Finnish approach is every child should have exactly the same opportunity to learn,
regardless of family background, income, or geographic location. Education
has been seen first and foremost not as a way to produce star performers,
but as an instrument to even out social inequality. The schools provide not only education but also free school meals, easy access to health
care, psychological counseling, and individualized student guidance.
