You make an interesting point. Whoever was videoing this event saw the dog, and filmed it, even before the animal saw the boy. I trust the dog's owner was hauled before the courts and severely dealt with, for allowing a dangerous animal on the street unsupervised. Probably not! There's few dogs would stand up to a determined cat - four sets of claws as well as teeth. When I worked for the British RSPCA I'd sooner have faced an aggressive dog rather than a feral cat. The latter could do me far more damage.
One other point I should make: contrary to what we might want to believe, the cat was NOT protecting the child. It was merely seeing off an intruder on its territory. It would have behaved in exactly the same manner if the child hadn't been there.
