A few small steps for the better at Guantanamo

The Pentagon has finally agreed to let some UN monitors into the Guantanamo complex. They'll be able to look around at many things but will not be allowed to talk to the detainees. Of course, we "have nothing to hide."

A judge has ruled that lawyers for those on a hunger strike must be told prior to force feeding and must receive medical reports weekly.

Al -

I know we don't want to behave as badly as our enemies, but how do we reconcile ourselves to the unspeakable cruelty of the beheading of three Christian school girls in Indonesia -- or the words spoken by Iran's President Ahmadinejad at last week's World without Zionism conference? Islamic fascists are getting smarter and better at using the media - ours and theirs - to support their goals. So we beat ourselves up over Gitmo and Abu Grahib, while they kill innocents and plot to kill more.

Will,
It is a very difficult issue, but you said it in your first sentence, "we don't want to behave as badly as our enemies". By our behavior in Guantanamo and Abu Gharaib we are playing into the hands of the madmen and antagonzing whatever moderates there might be left.
