A Different Kind of Conservative

William Buckley didn't demonize liberals. He fought hard for his ideas. I didn't agree with a lot of his positions, but he seemed to be a good human being. We - liberals, conservatives, middle-roaders - need more people like him.

I thought he was pompous and insufferable and his nasal twang irritated me.

Even the pompous can be good people.

I'm not sure I'd define him as a 'good' person. At best, it's my opinion he was guilty of mis-guided arrogance. Of course, he was not well known in Britain, so my knowledge of the man is limited, but his defense of McCarthy and his ardent Catholicism do not endear me to him. I doubt he had any experience of, or sympathy for, the poorer members of American society.

WFB Jr's not even in the ground and you guys need to score personal and partisan points. You should be so lucky to be mourned by millions as he is this week. Thx for sticking up for him, Al.

Makonikey - No-one's 'scoring personal and partisan points'. Both anonymous and myself were expressing personal opinions of the man. I never could condone the 'don't speak ill of the dead' slogan. Frankly, once I'm dead I couldn't care less who mourns me, or what people say about me. How can I be "partisan" when I'm British and don't support either party?
