Is it our health system, our genes, our lifestyle?
A recent study of infant mortality rates claims that the rate of infant deaths in the US is 5 in 1000. That's about the same rate as Slovakia and worse than most other developed countries. Some comparisons: Japan 1.8 in 1000, Norway 2, France 3, Canada 4.

Possibly all three, but certainly a combination of two: health service and lifestyle. Having experienced both a government run health service and the company run American health system, I have no doubt that the latter is failing those who cannot afford proper insurance. The American lifestyle, with its emphasis on snack food, sugar, and animal fats, coupled with a dependence on the motor car for travelling distances easily walkable, results in obesity and high rates of diabetes-related illnesses. Little wonder that more weakling babies are born that fail to survive.
Incidentally, all the countries you compare with have some form of government run health service.
