My first job was as Controller of a chicken breeder. The thing that has stayed with me after all these years is the fact that it was very difficult to tell the male from the female chicks. However, since females sold for more than males, finding out which was which was vital to the success of the company. The people who did the 'sexing' were Japanese. In fact, at that time all sexers were Japanese. Forty and more years on that still appears to be the case as indicated by this clip from 'Dirty Jobs' on the Discovery Channel.

Way back in the mists of time, I was employed by the Chester Zoological Society in England to set-up and run a small animal breeding unit, producing rabbits, rats, guinea-pigs, mice, chickens and various other creatures to be reared as food for the zoo animals. We bought in 150 day old male chicks each week. Most were humanely slaughtered within days to feed the exotic owls and other raptors. The sexers always missed a few, though, and I would weed out the occasional pullet that had slipped through the net. They eventually supplied me, and the other employees on the unit, with a regular supply of farm fresh eggs.
