Top Secret

Did you know that there are 182,000 federal jobs that require a Top Secret clearance? Did you know that Top Secret really isn't top? There are Special Access Programs (SAPs) that need their own special clearance. A listing of the number of SAPs in 2010 is over 300 printed pages. That's a lot of people outside of the military involved in keeping us safe
Not all of the people with Top Secret clearance or working in the SAPs are government employees. There are 1,900 companies working on Top Secret tasks; about one-fourth of those with Top Secret clearance are employees of private companies. And these employees do better financially than government workers.
According to a 2008 study by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, contractors made up 29 percent of the workforce in the intelligence system but were responsible for about half of the personnel costs. Former Secretary Gates, has been quoted as saying that contractors cost the Pentagon 25 percent more than federal employees.

Do we need all these people? Is this another area that could help reduce our deficit?
