Why Should Government Respond Differently to Natural vs. Economic Disasters? That's the title of an article by David Callahan. Few of us are complaining when governments help us recover from the damage wrought by Hurricane Sandy. Yet, why is a government offering help from a man-made disaster considered such a bad thing by many of us?
As with Sandy and other natural disasters, many of the unemployed can do very little in the face of
large-scale economic downturns driven by structural factors that are
national and even global in scope. As for relying on charity, it would be just about impossible for any combination of charities to provide the magnitude of the safety net required when millions have been unemployed for long periods of time.
