I admit I was not a fan of Richard Nixon when he was a political player. My views have changed, especially when you look at those who succeeded him, especially the last two, George W and Barack.
McClatchy has a retrospective of him on what would have been his hundredth birthday. One of his former aides who now helps curate the Nixon Museum has this summary, "His greatest legacy is that he left the world a safer and more peaceful
place, and he appreciated the difference government could make in the
lives of average Americans. He knew how to get things
done.” Some of the good things he got done include: the opening to China, the SALT treaty, the EPA, expansion of affirmative action.
