Ignoring PTSD
The GAO just did a study of how the military treats service members being thrown out of the military. The results show that the Department of Defense (DOD) does not do a very good job. 62 percent (51,741) of the 91,764 cases the GAO looked at showed that "service members separated for misconduct from fiscal years
2011 through 2015 had been diagnosed within the 2 years prior to separation
with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), or
certain other conditions that could be associated with misconduct". Of these 57,141, 23 percent, or 13,283, may not be eligible for veterans benefits as they received an “other than
honorable”discharge.
