Tom McMillen, a former professional athlete as well as former Congressman, thinks that the college athletics fiasco could be minimized, if not eliminated, if the governing board of colleges took on the responsibility of cleaning up the mess. He thinks that the presidents cannot do it. He gives a few examples where college boards are actually doing something positive.
However, you can cite boards of public companies which operate in the interests of all of a company's stakeholders, but the number you can cite is quite small. It takes a certain degree of self-confidence and a conscience for a board member to stand up to a CEO. Would that the boards of all of our institutions - public and private, profit and non-profit, large and small - were stronger, but that's asking for people to change. We have reached a state where being on a board is perceived more as a way to make extra money or to be seen as a leader. We need board members who are willing to put in the time, effort, talent and commitment needed to create and sustain a successful organization.
