Athletics has assumed a major role in education in this country. Most football coaches earn more than the president of their college. Many parents spend thousands of dollars in the belief that their child is athletically gifted. Reality says that a very small percentage of poiple are gifted enough to earn a living playing sports professionally. Yet, we are still willing to have our kids spend a lot of their youth playing sports with the aim of becoming a professional athlete. And, this willingness is probably no greater than in Texas. Texas is willing to allow student athletes to count as many as four courses in subjects as exotic as weight lifting or watching game films to count towards the credits needed to graduate.
Athletics is not alone in the view of those running the education system in Texas. Attending classes in marching band or ROTC (in high school?) also qualify as the type of courses one needs to graduate from a Texas high school.
