Odd Names for Towns

I spent the weekend near Syracuse, NY and was struck by the names of some of the towns we drove by: Elba, Waterloo, Corfu, Delhi, Rome, Liverpool.  I found it odd that several NY citizens named their towns after foreign cities.  I agree that New Yorkers are not unique in this regard but they do have a number of odd names: Bagdad, Bath, Belgium, China, Cuba, Denmark, Egypt, Florida, Limerick, Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, Peru, Poland, Russia.
