Some university students were watching on television a cricket game between Pakistan and India. Some of the students happened to be from Kashmir, a region divided between the two countries, and were rooting for Pakistan.
Leaders from a right-of-center Hindu nationalist group that polls suggest will soon dominate India’s central government complained about the students' cheering to the vice chancellor of the school, who promptly filed charges of sedition and instigating hate between two communities.
