Does it have to do with a sense of inferiority?

At the latest minute those in charge of the opening ceremonies at the Olympics decided that the girl with the best voice was not pretty enough, she had buck teeth. So, they had the prettier girl pretend to sing a song recorded by the average-looking girl.

I thought both girls were adorable. Little kids are like puppies or chicks. Shame though that the one with the talent couldn't get the reward. Kind of like the speechwriters and screenwriters vs politicians and movie stars.

Very much so. The Chinese still refer to the 'Century of Humiliation", which began back in the 1840's after their defeat in the Opium Wars, when the British East India Company fought them and won, towards the end of the (I think) Qing Dynasty? It was how Britain originally gained control of Hong Kong. Believe it or not, we (the British) were fighting to force the Chinese to import OUR opium.
Back in 2007 they were talking of declaring an annual "Day of Humiliation", but I don't know if anything came of it.
A huge national inferiority complex means everything has to be perfect. Just marginally imperfect would be a total disaster.
