The long Bloomfield nightmare is over

and the lights are on again all over the town.

The electrical power returned at 3:45. The October snowstorm last Saturday turned the lights off in our apartments. From the viewpoint of a newcomer to Connecticut, I suspect that the state has a much harder time getting power restored than my home state of Massachusetts. The utility that serves the Greater Hartford area, Connecticut Light and Power, just didn't seem to be up to the task. They ignored the weather forecasts early in the week. They hadn't paid their contractors for work done in connection with Irene. They seemed to be very slow off the mark. Where Massachusetts had restored power to half of its customers by late Monday, CL&P had restored power to about 1% of their customers.

While here at Duncaster we were without electricity in our apartments, we did have heat and water, both hot and cold. The common areas - dining, pool, exercise studio, library, meeting room, computer room, etc. - were all functioning normally during the week. We fared much better than the residents of the surrounding towns, most of whom were without heat and electricity and some without water.

Does this autumn storm presage a tough winter?
