Finally, it begins

Tomorrow morning we should hear about the demise of one or more Republican candidates for President. I probably shouldn't have capitalized president as that implies some modicum of maturity, intelligence, commitment, honesty that the GOP candidates have not displayed.

If one wants to know whether the country is in decline or not, all you have to do is consider the statements and actions of those who would be the leaders of the free world. None of them - well, maybe Huntsman - has given an indication that they are capable of leading a small town, let alone this country. True, we have governors, senators, congressmen competing for this nomination, but their achieving these positions says a lot about this country.

Fundamentally, we have ourselves to blame for electing these people. We've created a system that rewards those who have or can raise money, not a system that elects those who can lead us in the 21st century. I've spoken before about replacing elections for federal office with a lottery system akin to that of our jury system. Could the 'winners' of the lottery be any worse than our current 'leaders'?
