$24 billion is a lot of money
That's how much Americans spent on the health care of their pets in 2006. That's more than the GDP of some countries. Some of the treatments were acupuncture, aromatherapy, behavior counseling, root canal and chemotherapy. I wonder how the application of these treatments differs between animal and people. Will this kind of spending continue as the economy tanks?

Vets want to live too. You assume humans are more valuable than dogs and that is not always the case.
That money would go a long way towards providing healthcare for every American. While I agree with NE that veterinarians have a right to a living, I know from experience that many vets visits are unnecessary. Most are down to sheer neglect, in the form of gross over-indulgence by their owners.
