For years I thought that almost all matters in the Senate were resolved by a vote of the majority of the senators voting. That procedure has changed in the 21st century; now many matters 'need' 60 votes because the party in power fears the other party will filibuster. Why there is this fear I know not. True, the valuable time of our conscientious leaders will be wasted; after all, they could be doing their normal serious business of destroying this country. In almost all cases of filibustering the actual act really only soothes the ego of those filibustering while revealing them to be petulant children to the rest of the country.
I was somewhat surprised to see that the Senate 'rejected' its latest proposal on Sunday by a vote of 50-49. Such rejection of a majority vote has become common practice but one would have thought that a filibuster at this moment in time would have wrecked the political career of those filibustering. Most politicians with an IQ above 50 would have seen that and would not have taken too much of the valuable time of the Senate.
