He's a Great Negotiator

... is our peerless leader Barack Obama. He is leading us right down the track the brilliant Republicans propose to take us, the track where we live in a dream world that ignores the number of people in need in this country, the shabby state of our infrastructure, the enormous sums spent on the military, the gathering decline of our empire. Basically, they and he ignore reality for crass political posturing and, on their part, a hoped-for gain.

Mark Thoma makes some trenchant comments about the stupidity of GW Obama's latest offering to the GOP.

How did Obama get so far? I had thought that big time politics required a fair amount of negotiation, an area in which Mr. O shows the skill of a child. Here, he has a majority - himself and the Senate - of the people who make our laws and he's been backing down all year. He may not be the dumbest president we've had, but he certainly lacks cojones.

Just about all sensible economists tell us that the problems of our joblessness and our stagnant economy are more necessary to be solved today than reducing the debt. Why can't O invoke Article 14 of the Constitution and stop all this prattle about the debt?

The GAO has done a lot of work identifying waste and mismanagement in the federal government. Shouldn't our leaders pay attention?
