Should we listen to Dennis Blair?

He reached the level of Admiral in our Navy and was appointed Director of National Intelligence (DNI) by Mr. Obama. He didn't last long in that job; after 14 months Obama fired him. It's reported that Obama didn't want him to pursue an agreement with France re espionage in the U.S.and France. Plus, he was the DNI when the Ft. Hood shooting took place, the underwear bomber was caught and the Times Square plot was stopped. However, he was invited to the Aspen Security Forum, which features many household names in the world of security. So, maybe he's not all bad.

What he said at the Forum clearly reflected a very sensible viewpoint, at least to my eyes. The drone attacks are not strategically effective and damage our relations with countries in which we use them “because we’re treating countries just as places where we go attack groups that threaten us, we are threatening the prospects of long-term reform".  Blair also pointed out that - exclusive of Iraq and Afghanistan - we spend about $80 billion a year defending ourselves against terrorism. Yet, Al-Qaida and company have about 4,000 members, each one of which is worth spending $20,000,000 on. “What is it that justifies this amount of money on this narrow problem?” he asked.
