Taxation Without Representation

That was one of the reasons for the Revolutionary War. It seems like we have reached that state once more if you assume that 'representation' means that the people in Congress and the White House act in the best interests of their constituents. Clearly, this has not been the case in the 21st century and for years earlier. And it does not look like it will get better, it will only get worse.

It may be time to really push for a new system of electing our Congressional leaders. A friend of mine has an interesting idea with regard to our representatives in Congress and elsewhere. Norm's premise is that the collective wisdom and judgment of the average person is superior to that of the average Congressman or Senator. So, he asks, why don't we pick our representatives by lottery, much as we pick people to sit on a jury? I think he has a point.
